The project is focused on the city of Porto, in the eastern part of the city. As a design exercise, the aim was to project a School/House of Dance and a whole complex associated to it, thus completing the triad of cultural facilities, strategically located in the Porto metropolitan area, with Casa da Arquitetura and Casa da Música. Given the past industrial context and the new housing concentration in the city, the motto of the work was “Building with the Built”.
The proposal is directed southwards towards the Douro River and is divided into two distinct entrances at different levels. A lower one with access to the student residence and an upper one to the entire dance complex. This is made up of a former power station, now rehabilitated and open to the public, where the main auditorium and adjacent program are located. In turn, associated with this building is a square-shaped dance school with all the rooms and respective academic and administrative services.
